History of PU Foam in Automotive Interiors

Chrysler’s very first PU foam standard, issued in 1961, laid the groundwork for the test series that exists today -- mainly ASTM D3754. Improvement in comfort and durability didn’t stop with the initial development of PU Foam. As a whole, the automotive industry has pushed towards high resilience versions of PU foam. The structure of the foam plays a very important role in occupant safety, such as the variables highlighted in FMVSS 202a head restraint testing.
The most important aspect engineers must deal with is the balancing act between comfort and support. Foam that is too soft, although comfortable, will not provide as much resilience to impact and daily wear. Foam that is too hard faces similar issues and will force the energy to be absorbed over a short distance. Both situations can compromise occupant protection, leading to these essential properties having a profound impact on safety.
