ATD History and MGA’s Inventory

Early ATD development in the 1950s focused exclusively on adult occupants, beginning with the 50th percentile male and later expanding to include small female and large male representations.

By the early 1990s, pediatric ATDs were introduced in the United States with the addition of child-sized Hybrid III models (3-, 6-, and 10-year-old) and the Child Restraint and Airbag Interaction (CRABI) series to represent infants. These ATDs were subsequently incorporated into FMVSS testing and became foundational tools in child restraint system development.

In Europe, parallel research led to the development of the Q-series pediatric ATDs, spanning newborn to pre-teen sizes and featuring advanced instrumentation, such as Infra-Red Telescoping Rod for the Assessment of Chest Compression (IR-TRACC) systems, to support more comprehensive injury assessment.
